Welcome

Occupy Portland is a group of protesters in Portland, Oregon, stationed in Chapman Square. The group is a satellite of the Occupy Wall Street protest. In addition to their tent-village occupation in the park, they have been marching through Portland every few days. They intend to protest indefinitely.

Here are many of their messages.

Written Statements

This is a collection of various written statements on display around the park. These statements were not made as a group. Like the signs and banners, they reflect the opinions of individuals.

"List of Proposed Demands

1. Congress pass HR 1489 “Return to prudent banking act”
2. Use congressional authority and oversight to investigate and prosecute Wall St. criminals.
3. Enact legislation to protect our democracy by reversing the effects of the supreme court decision which essentially said corporations can spend as much as the want on elections.
4. Pass the Buffet Rule on fair taxation so the rich and corporations pay their fair share and close corporate tax loopholes and enact a prohibition against hiding funds off shore.
5. Completely revamp the Securities and Exchange Commission and staff it at all levels with proven professionals who protect the integrity of the marketplace so citizens and investors are protected.
6. Pass specific and effective laws limiting the influence of lobbyists.
7. Pass “Revolving Door Legislation” eliminating the ability of former government regulators going to work for companies they regulated.
8. Eliminate “Personhood” legal status for corporations."

"The modern unemployment line, full of seasoned, educated and skilled workers, points out that the individual is no longer able to secure a job alone.

Automation, globalization, outsourcing, etc. has created the possibility that full employment may not be possible in the future.

Employers seek to eliminate jobs and drive down the cost of employees. Unions and laws are the only forces working for better jobs, job sharing, and safety nets for those left behind.

Workers competing with each other only drives down wages and eliminates jobs.

Working together to make jobs a right, and an economy that includes everyone, is the only way to create security and justice in the workplace.

This coalition will help workers get through this crisis and work for change, job sharing, and a minimal subsidy for those for whom a job can’t be found."

"THE WHY?

It is a protest against corporate greed. The one percent who have are keeping the other 99% of us down. That 99% will no longer tolerate being kept down. The 1% are not being held accountable. There is a militarism that has taken over Washington D.C.

The execution of Troy Davis who was convicted of killing an off-duty police officer is symbolic of the power of an unforgiving government over the poor.

There is a frustration with the hope inspired by the election of Barack Obama and the disappointment of his administration."

"Assertion of Rights

Officer please understand:

I have the right to have an attorney present if you want to question me or conduct any search of my body or personal effects. I am not giving my consent to any type of search.
If I am under arrest, I wish to invoke and exercise my Miranda Rights. I want to speak to an attorney now. I do not want my personal property impounded, nor do I consent to any impoundment. I request the opportunity to secure my personal effects.
If I am not under arrest, please tell me immediately so that I may leave."

General Assembly Notes

The General Assembly is the main decision making meeting of the occupation. Decisions made at the General Assembly meetings are made by consensus or near consensus, as opposed to a majority-wins vote.

-No consensus on staying.
-Next option. Some stay some go. If supported, we will explore where we will go.
-Does it benefit us to stay in a black fence even if we can't come and go?
-This movement is in our mind, we cannot be divided.
-This park isn't big enough for growth.
-We need to flier, go to our unions and grow.
-Point of process - decide to stay and go.
-Call for locations: PSU park blocks (supported by second stack), waterfront, Pioneer Square, March*, marathon route.
-Must be prepared to move to new location. Small working group get together, research locations.
-Workgroups to develop skeleton crew, and find new pace."
